On 2nd of July, the Guild of Young Freemen kicked off its new calendar year with a wonderful event organised by the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers, titled “Beyond the Flickering Candle,” entirely conceived by their Master the 686th Lord Mayor of the City of London, Dame Fiona Woolf DBE, DStJ, DL.

The dinner, hosted at Wax Chandlers’ Hall, was at full capacity, comprising half members of the Wax Chandlers and half members of the Guild. Each course was accompanied by brief and engaging talks by Barbara Hearn OBE and Bee Rowlatt, who shared their experiences in raising the profile of the renowned human rights campaigner Mary Wollstonecraft, inspiring many Guild members and members of the Wax Chandler’s Livery.

Deputy Masters of Wax Chandlers, Tim Maile and Liveryman Timothy Evans spoke about the fantastic charitable work that the Wax Chandlers do today and how they have reinvented themselves over the centuries. Our Master Grace Abba also discussed the evolution of the The Guild of Young Freemen and its role today, under the watchful eye of Peter Tompkins, a past president of the then Society of Young Freemen of the City of London, who served as president from 1991 to 1992.

We hope this will be one of many such dinners where we not only get to know the livery but also allow the livery to get to know us and thank all involved especially Timothy Evans and Middle Warden of the Guild of Young Freemen Rafael Steinmetz Leffa who helped organise this event.
