Meet the Livery: Harnessing Heritage – The City’s Equine Legacy

Sep 18, 2025

Last week, members of the The Guild of Young Freemen gathered at the magnificent Saddlers’ Hall for a very special event: “Harnessing Heritage: The City’s Equine Legacy”.

By kind permission of the The Worshipful Company Of Saddlers, the Guild was delighted to welcome representatives of all four equine Livery Companies, who shared insights into their history, traditions, and modern role in the City:

  • The Worshipful Company of Farriers – Past Master, Martin HC Russell MBE DL FCT
  • The Worshipful Company of Loriners – Immediate Past Master, Colin Gurley
  • The Worshipful Company Of Saddlers – Clerk, Brigadier Philip Napier OBE MSc
  • The Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers – Hon. Court Assistant, David Barrett

Following a reception, guests enjoyed presentations exploring the enduring role of the horse and related crafts in London’s history, from forge and tack to carriage and saddle.

The evening highlighted not only the ancient skills preserved by these Companies, but also the ways they continue to adapt their trades for the modern world, ensuring that the City’s equine heritage remains a source of inspiration for generations to come.

Our warm thanks go to the The Worshipful Company Of Saddlers for hosting us, our Deputy Clerk Anna Kowalik who worked hard behind the scenes to make the event happen and to the Livery Companies for their generous time, wisdom, and fellowship.
