Visit to the College of Arms

Aug 20, 2025

Earlier this week, members of the Guild of Young Freemen enjoyed a captivating visit to the historic College of Arms. We were honoured to be guided by our Founder and Past Chairman of the Society of Young Freemen (1978-79) , William Hunt, former Windsor Herald of Arms in Ordinary, together with Mark Scott, Somerset Herald.

Founded in 1484, the College is the official heraldic authority for England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and much of the Commonwealth. During the tour, our members explored the ancient art and continuing practice of heraldry, the role of the heralds in great state ceremonies, and the College’s unique responsibility for coats of arms and genealogical records. The group was also privileged to view some of the College’s remarkable archives and treasures, rarely seen by the public.

We extend our thanks to William Hunt and to Mark Scott, Somerset Herald, for their generous time and insightful guidance, which brought the College’s history and living traditions vividly to life.
