The Guild of Young Freemen is proud to follow in the strong Livery tradition of giving both our time and money to support charitable causes across the City of London. This ranges from our engagement with local schools, sponsoring prizes at the City of London Freemen’s School, the City of London School, the City of London School for Girls, and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, to our continuing support of the Armed Forces through the Royal British Legion, and finally to direct engagement from our membership at flagship events in the City.

A particular highlight in our charitable calendar is the Worshipful Company of Woolmen’s Sheep Drive; this modern incarnation of the ancient, yet very much commonplace in its time, act of driving livestock over London Bridge into the City for trading gives Freemen of the City of London a chance to exercise one of their historic rights – a Freeman would be exempt from paying a toll to cross the bridge – and the Guild is privileged to act as the Official Marshals throughout the day, helping to raise around £30,000 each year in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and the Woolmen’s Charitable Trust.

The Lord Mayor's Appeal

The Guild of Young Freemen is also heavily involved in the work of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, pledging one hundred hours of volunteering time each year from our members in order to achieve the goal of creating a better city for all. The appeal draws on all those who call the City their home – businesses, Liveries, and residents alike – to bring about a transformational impact on people’s lives by finding solutions to some of London’s most pressing societal issues.
